Brunch at Hernan Gipponi | Sunday Brunches | Palermo

The first spread: croissants + a few slices of bread, coffee, two shots of juices, and butter, jam + dulce de leche

want to show the layers of this buttery croissant

larger shot glass of bloody mary

the drizzle of hollandaise sauce

beautiful slow poached eggs benedict with housemade brioche bread

green eggs: slow poached eggs with cocoa powder (the favorite component) and green pea puree

scrumptious bite of pan-fried prawns, with a reduction of red wine + cherries.

something fried: calamari and tartar sauce

one of my favorite dish in this brunch: beautiful tomato confit with tender flank sprinkled with sea salt

and...the devil dessert: panqueque with dulce de leche, raisins, chocolate shavings, and a scoop of vanilla gelato

 **Updated post. February 19th 2012.

Still my #1 choice to go for a long, lazy, whole afternoon lingering brunch. Service is always great, the food is innovative, and the ambiance is perfect to bring friends, other half, or foodies who wants a special Sunday treat.

Ever since the secret is out, this place has been crowding up for brunch and lunch. The usual spun of brunch creativity that was thrown solely to us to experiment is now feeding half the restaurant. Fair enough- tis for the best, because every time the whole kitchen crew had us rolling out the door by the end of the meal, gripping our stomach in pain and pleasure. Last time their new creation,  dulce de leche panqueque- as big as a hand and as a thick as 2 inches, had me go straight into a food coma. The price? Still awesomely the same. 100 pesos for a series of dishes that always includes their delicious croissants, coffee to order as you wish, a bottle of water, some sort of eggs, and a few other dishes to surprise. Well worth it but not that reservation is needed.

Pros

  • great service and food- like always
  • still the best eggs benedict in town (have to call and order beforehand)
  • love their croissants
  • great coffees
  • super affordable

the beautifully scrambled eggs

buttery croissants and all things warm and delicious

egg haters: substituting with a trail of cheeses

just when you think breakfast is over..it has started: crispy spanish fries

calamari

a favorite of ours: smoked salmon on toast with the drizzle of honey

shot of bloody mary in between

tender delicious shrimps

a bite of pork

veggie options: delicious tofu sitting on barley rice

pudding cake

Sigh...the end

After a beautiful dinner, who would have thought the brunch next day would be just as extravagant, if not more impressive. When we sat down, we thought it would be a typical brunch, some eggs, good pastries, and at most, a touch of something special. None of us knew this meal would end up to being almost a 4 hour dining experience.

Brunch Critic

Since my last post mentioned the ambiance and the staff, I’m going to focus more on the brunch dishes.

Sitting down without any expectations, the whole group was ready for some bites of eggs and scrumptious pastries- our focus more on celebrating someone’s birthday than the food that was to come. Little did we know, the dishes kept coming, and remarks were made around the table, “Wow? Again? I should not have eaten so much in the beginning! This is awesome!” Yes, the highlight became the meal itself. After the fruits, frothy yogurt, creamy soft scrambled eggs, and the very impressive layers of delicious croissants (word is that the pastry chef used to work under Francis Mallman), we were then bombarded with a series of tapas: crispy, salty flavourful spanish fries, calamari, tender and fresh shrimp, smoked salmon with a drizzle of honey, and the desserts. And between all that, a shot of bloody mary, coffee and smiles from the staff. Unlike a lot of brunches in this city, more quantity than quality, I really love the quality and precision he emphasizes in his dishes. All that for a price of 100 pesos ($24). Unbelievably affordable! After posting, I’m again off to brunch at the hotel. This time going to try out their eggs benedict.:)

Pros

  • semi-casual brunch: a different brunch scene, though not as formal as hotel brunch. The best relaxing fine brunching option in the city.
  • delicious pastries: love the croissants
  • beautiful presentation, flavours and surprises
  • bloody mary with a good kick

Thanks for the brunch suggestion. Not sure if it’s hearty enough for my tastes but I am always seeking out brunch options in BA. Last Sunday I tried to go to The Office but it appears to have been closed by Macri’s goons. We went to Chi-Cha nearby. I ordered the asparagus risotto with a Bloody Mary on the side. My date ordered the chicken and guacamole sandwich with two Stella Artois and a Bloody Mary on the side. The waitress spilled one of the Bloody Marys on my date but at least that meant they were on the house. No celery by the way. It was 3:30pm as well so not sure if it technically qualifies as a brunch. Oh, and yes. Eggs benedict.
